Jill Barber sings Hank Williams and Other Vintage Classics
Jill Barber was joined onstage by the fabulous Steve Dawson and the Black Hen’s for a mostly acoustic evening of tunes by Hank Williams and other vintage classics!

Fire & Smoke
Claire Morrison and Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner met in 2010, around a campfire at the infamous campground of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. They quickly realized there was musical chemistry between the two of them. After that first meeting, Daniel tried to track down Claire to find out if she would be interested in working with him. Once he found her, he was relieved to hear the answer was yes, since he’d already booked their first show at a music festival!
Since then, their bilingual performances have created a buzz in both the French and English communities. Just last year, Fire & Smoke won the People’s Choice Award at Chant’Ouest, Western Canada’s well known music competition featuring Francophone artists. Not bad, for a chance campfire singalong.

Flatlander Blues – Suzie Vinnick, Big Dave McLean, Shaun Verreault
The blues know no boundaries. No matter where you live and what you do, it’s just part of the human condition. And when it comes to expressing those feelings through music, two artists from the prairies do it very well, Suzie Vinnick and Big Dave McLean.

Isabeau et les Chercheurs d’Or
Quebec roots music has found a new vedette. Isabeau et les chercheurs d’or are the perfect companion for the honky-tonk lover sitting on the stoop at the farm.
Isabeau Valois and Francois Gagnon are the chief scribes and voices in this quintet of banjo, guitar and mandolin.

Rose Cousins live at the Ironwood
There’s great music, a lot of laughs and some pretty impressive whistling at this show from the Ironwood Stage in Calgary. Rose Cousins is blessed with a gorgeous voice and a gift for songwriting. Those qualities have been recognized with mulitple awards including songwriter of the year at the 2011 ECMAs. Rose is touring extensively with her third album called “We Have Made A Spark.” The album was recorded in Boston with producer Zachariah Hickman. He joins her on bass in this Calgary show along with Austin Nevins on guitar.

Old Man Luedecke live at The Great Hall
For Old Man Luedecke being the opener is never a problem. Within seconds he has the audience eating from the palm of his hand. His beautiful songs and his more than interesting between song banter is always sure to draw in the audience and keep them entertained.
Old Man Luedecke played an opening set which featured the debut of one of his new songs, ‘Jonah and the Whale’ as well as some fan favourites like the surprise set closer ‘Banjo Underground’. Later he joined The Deep Dark Woods for a guest spot in their set where he was welcomed to the stage by rousing applause. He had won them over.

The Modern Grass
The instrumentation is bluegrass, the music is newgrass. With influences ranging from jazz to bluegrass, gypsy to blues, classical and folk, this young group of musicians is melding styles and taking acoustic music into the future.
Although The Modern Grass is only a little over a year old, they have already done a cross Canada tour and are recording their second album.

Celtic Colours 2011 – The Boys and Their Ballads
Each of these “boys” is a balladeer of considerable renown. It was a great pleasure to welcome Dougie MacLean and Archie Fisher back to Celtic Colours from Scotland. When it comes to the songs they have contributed to the folk canon, they truly need no introduction. James Keelaghan was here in 2008 for the songwriting project Coming Home, which he described as “…an amazing experience”. And Cape Breton’s own man of song, Buddy MacDonald, completes this truly rare lineup of modern day balladeers.

Matt Andersen live in Whistler
New Brunswick’s Matt Andersen is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. And so much more. Matt is a larger than life entertainer. A Blues and Roots musical force with a slashing slide guitar and a powerful, soulful voice. And a nice guy!

Christmas Dinner with Dala
Darlings of the Canadian music scene, these JUNO nominees have released five albums and toured extensively across North America for the better part of a decade. They performed Christmas music plus some of their favourite original songs-in their trademark perfect harmony–at the NAC Studio in Ottawa. The audience really felt like they were hanging out in Dala’s dining room, laughing constantly at their between-song banter.

Bachman & Turner live in Winnipeg
Randy Bachman is one of the founding fathers of world class rock & roll in Canada. His work with The Guess Who helped establish the Canadian music scene at a time where virtually all of the music was either from The United States or Britain. In 1971, Bachman was looking for a new singer for his band Brave Belt and former Winnipegger Neil Young suggested he call Fred (CF) Turner. It was this group that eventually became BTO or Bachman Turner Overdrive.

Robert Plant and Band of Joy live in Winnipeg
There are few artists in the music world who have maintained a vibrant 40 plus year career. One such person is Robert Plant. From his work with Led Zeppelin to his Grammy award winning project with Allison Krause, Plant has reinvented himself yet stayed true to his passion for music. In June of 2011, he appeared with his group Band of Joy at the TD International Jazz Winnipeg Festival to a packed concert hall.

Karl Roth at the Bassment
Calgary’s Karl Roth has been performing for audiences for 30 years, entertaining with his distinctive jazz violin playing and gravelly singing voice. He also knows how to make an audience laugh.
For this concert at Saskatoon Bassment Club, Karl was joined by a talented bunch of guys. Karl brought along his hometown collaborator Dave Hamilton who has won Alberta Instrumentalist of the Year three times. Veteran Saskatoon jazz bassist and great friend of Karl’s – Skip Kutz – joined the group, too. Rounding out the band are drummer Don Tatchell and keyboard player Ross Nykiforuk.
Karl Roth’s easy going, playful manner and vast song book of old jazz, blues and swing favorites endeared to him all. This Saskatoon Jazz Society concert had the energetic audience laughing, clapping and humming along. We’re sure you will be, too.

The Barra MacNeils live in Halifax
When it comes to getting an audience off their seats and to the dance floor – there are few bands better than The Barra MacNeils.
This family based band from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, has been touring the world for over twenty years with their unique brand of Celtic music. So, they were the perfect choice to headline the closing party at the 2011 Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon race weekend in Halifax. Thousands of people participated in the event, running from five Ks. to a full marathon, and by Sunday night – they were exhilarated and exhausted. But, the minute the Barra MacNeil’s hit the stage – they found new energy and danced the night away.

Festival Musique du Monde de Montréal: Soirée Spaghatt

Naples born and Montreal bred Angelo Finaldi presents the premiere of Part 2 of Wop Pow Wow, where songs and self-criticizing humour meet. For Finaldi, the term “Wop” is both a compliment and a culture in itself.
Sharing his iconoclastic vision are French-Italian-Corsican-Serbian Montreal vocal stylist Betty Bonifassi and composer-guitarist Benoit Charest, the brilliant mind behind the soundtrack of Les Triplettes de Belleville. Also featured is Toronto-Italian singer-songwriter Dominic Mancuso, winner of the 2010 JUNO for best world music album.

Les Violons du Roy with La Chapelle de Québec: Bach Cantatas
Les Violons du Roy and La Chapelle de Québec share the stage for an exciting performance of some of Bach’s greatest choral works.
Under the direction of Bernard Labadie, four renowned soloists join the orchestra and chorus for a programme of four of Bach’s greatest choral hits. Cantatas and other choral works account for almost half of Johann Sebastian Bach’s thousand-item-long catalogue. From 1723 to his death, Bach was cantor of Leipzig, where among his many duties he had to supply music for the city’s four main churches-hence the tremendous number of works he wrote for religious services.
