Das fretwork Ensemble<\/strong> ist ein Gamben Ensemble aus England, das seit 1986 besteht und Musik aus 500 Jahren f\u00fcr diese Besetzung spielt. Das Ensemble beschr\u00e4nkt sich nicht auf die alte Musik, die man typischerweise mit so einem Ensemble in Verbindung bringt, sondern hat immer wieder neue Kompositionen in Auftrag gegeben, um das Repertoir mit zeitgen\u00f6ssischer Musik zu erweitern.<\/p>\n

Ein gelungenes Beispiel ist die Komposition The World Encompassed von Orlando Gough<\/strong>. Diese Komposition nimmt sich die Weltumseegelung von Sir Francis Drake zum Thema. Drake hatte in seinem pers\u00f6nlichen Stab auch vier Musiker – offensichtlich Gambenspieler mit dabei. Die Komposition von Orlando Gough verbindet neue Kompositionen zu verschiedenen Ereignissen der Reise mit originalen Kompositionen, wie sie die Musiker auf dem Schiff m\u00f6glicherweise f\u00fcr Francis Drake gespielt haben.<\/p>\n

Fretwork has a repertoire that spans over 500 years. They specialize in early music and have distinguished themselves in their interpretations of Bach.<\/p>\n

Fretwork has also actively commissioned contemporary composers ranging from Gavin Bryars to Elvis Costello to write new works for them. \u2018The World Encompassed‘ by Orlando Gough, is the most recent of these commissions. This hour-long piece describes, in musical terms, Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe in 1577-80. Drake took four viol players with him on his epic journey, and Gough’s piece uses original 16th century music to help tell this engaging musical story.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
