Heute möchte ich ein ganz besonderes Banjo vorstellen. Dieses Banjo wurde 1896 von Icilio Consalvi gebaut und dabei auch komplett mit Bildern von Menschen, Drachen und mythologischen Figuren verziert. Dabei kamen aufwändig graviertes Perlmutt, Silber und Gold zum Einsatz, alle Teile des Instruments sind verziert, das Instrument galt schon damals als eines der schönsten Instrumente das je gebaut wurde.

Das Instrument war über viele Jahre im Familienbesitz der Nachkommen von Icilio Consalvi und wurde dann vor einigen Jahren dem Museum of Fine Arts in Boston gespendet. Auf der Website des Museums kann man das Banjo nun bewundern:

Worst of all, the would-be capstone of his collection recently slipped through Bollman’s grasp. An Italian immigrant craftsman named Icilio Consalvi made the banjo in question in 1896. Bollman knew about the instrument because he is an avid reader of old banjo journals–of which he has a larger collection than the Library of Congress–but had no idea if the banjo was anything special.
Then, 20 years ago, Consalvi’s son walked into Bollman’s store. “He told me what his name was and said his father had made this incredible banjo,” he says. “I said I know about the banjo, and I would love to see it.”

Bollman befriended Bozzio, but found out to his dismay that the banjo was held by another wing of the family. Before he could move on it last May, the banjo was donated to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA). Bollman was crushed. “As a collector, this was my Pieta!” he says. “This particular instrument, this holy grail, slipped through my fingers.”
