One such distant traveler is Kari Makinen, from Finland.
This marks Makinen’s seventh trip to MerleFest. A longtime fan, and now a friend of Doc Watson’s, he has built close relationships with folks in Wilkes.
“I’ve been a fool about Doc Watson’s music for about 30 years,” he said. “That’s my main reason to come here is to see Doc. Also, I’m friends with the Kruger Brothers, Steve Kilby and other pickers in Wilkes County.”
Makinen is a musician and also a luthier. This year he brought one special hand-built guitars, complete with “MerleFest” inlaid into the fretboard and a map of North Carolina on the back, with him. He gave it to the Wilkesboro Fire Department, which is raffling it off as part of a fundraiser.
