In den letzten Tagen habe ich mehrfach die CD Secrets von Sierra Hull angehört – auf der Seite von Airplay direct (siehe unten) kann man sich die komplette CD anhören. Vor allem das Instrumentalstück Smashville hat mich begeistert und ich habe es sehr oft angehört. Das Stück wurde von Jim VanCleve für diese CD von Sierra Hull komponiert. Die Melodie verläuft überwiegend chromatisch, mit vielen slides und Bindungen, Sierra spielt das perfekt und ich habe richtig Lust darauf das Stück selbst zu spielen

Jim was also recently asked to write an instrumental track for a studio project by Sierra Hull, the young mandolin and vocal prodigy you might have seen on television, either sitting in with Alison Krauss, or as an actress in the new Billy Graham movie. Ron Block (of Alison Krauss and Union Station), and Sierra produced her debut solo project and commissioned Jim to write the song, which eventually was entitled SMASHVILLE. Sierra’s album, Secrets, is now available on Rounder Records. Check it out!

Zum Schluss noch eine Version einer anderen jungen Mandolinenspielerin, die ich bisher nicht gekannt hatte, die Smashville aber auch gekonnt spielt. Sie heisst Cara Oliphant und kommt offensichtlich aus einer musikalischen Familie, die auch regelmäßig bei Wettbewerben erste Plätze belegt haben. Beim Wettbewerb Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships hat ihr Bruder Matthew Oliphant dieses Jahr in der Kategorie Banjo den ersten Platz belegt, Cara war zweite mit der Fiddle.
